Can I use your compost for houseplants?
Yes, all our composts are organically certified and are safe to use in your home. They have the additional advantage of being clean and pleasant to handle. You can, of course, add extra ingredients such as perlite or bark to ensure you have a tailored compost your houseplants will thrive in.
Do you use green waste in your composts?
No, we are keen to ensure that all the organic products we use in our compost are fully traceable. We have been unable to ensure that green waste, in its various guises, has no chemical or viral contaminants from the original material so we are not able to use green waste in our products.
How long can I store bags of Fertile Fibre?
Growing mediums can be stored for up to 9 months. Fertilisers last up to two years and compressed coir, if kept dry, can be stored indefinitely. Store them outside, out of direct sunlight, and preferably off the ground. A cool dry shed is ideal - but not under the staging in the greenhouse, fluctuating temperatures do not help the storage of these organic products. Once opened - reseal the bag to retain moisture.
What can I use to improve the structure of my soil?
We love using our compressed coir to improve the structure of the soil. The coir adds lots of humus matter to the soil and does a fantastic job of improving heavier clay soils
What do you charge for delivery?
Delivery is included in the prices quoted.
Why have I been charged extra for delivery when you say it's included?
Sadly, for a few postcodes, we are charged extra to deliver and we pass those costs on as a small additional charge. The postcodes affected can be viewed on our delivery information sheets.
Where is my order and can I track it with a tracking number?
We currently use couriers who do not provide tracking numbers to customers - this helps us to keep the costs of delivery down and the prices lower to you. We book next day delivery on all orders. If you have not received an order within three days of placing it - please email or ring us and we'll look into it for you.
How do I return a product?
We are very proud of our products but if you are not happy with your choice of product, you've received the incorrect goods or your order arrives damaged or defective - please contact us and we will do our best to resolve the issues promptly.
What is the difference between your seed, multipurpose and potting mixes?
We have recently updated the information on our website to help you decide which compost you need - if you are still not sure - please ring or email us - we are happy to advise.
Why is there green mold on the surface of my pots?
This is often caused by over-watering. Coir retains water better than normal composts. Check the moisture of the compost under the top layers of compost - you will usually find that while the top layer of compost is dry there is still plenty of moisture lower down in the pot or seed tray.
What is the occasional white bloom on top of my compost?
This is caused by the organic plant food mineralising on the surface of the growing medium. Reduce the heat or humidity of the compost and increase the available light. A sprinkling of coarse sand onto the surface helps.
Can I use compressed coir to grow plants and seeds?
You certainly can - but the key point is - the compressed coir is a naturally inert material - so plants will happily root into it and seeds will germinate - but they will not have access to nutrients unless you mix them in. So your plants will grow very pale and look rather hungry! Either mix your own composts using our coir as a base and our excellent recipes or buy our ready-to-use composts!
Can I use your coir for my reptile terrarium?
Yes, all our coir brick, bales, chips, or dried coir in bags would provide an excellent base for the terrariums. They are certified organic and are naturally inert. Once you are ready to dispose of the bedding it can, of course, be recycled into the compost or onto the garden.
Are your composts suitable for growing ericaceous plants?
Our coir-based composts are not really suitable for growing ericaceous plants - the pH is a bit too alkaline - typically 5.4 - 6.8. We do sell a grow bark and a reclaimed peat compost which would be suitable.
