PetFibre was born out of the necessity for something different.’

Our Story

Ziggy our Scarlet Macaw has been a part of our family for over 20 years. He was just an egg when he arrived in Herefordshire and is now a fully grown parrot. Over the years, we have experimented with different bedding for Ziggy. We wanted something cost-effective, easy to clean and aesthetically pleasing. Years of trial and error produced no results.

Eventually we realised the answer was right in front of us. FertileFibre. At heart, we are a compost company, but we have seen the benefits in using our products in other formats. We started using the inert coconut by-product, Coir for his cage.

We found that it met our criteria of cost-effective, easy to clean and aesthetically pleasing. We realised that others should benefit from this novel application.

In 2021, we launched PetFibre. We are now proud to work with several national UK zoos across 3 Classes of animals. On top of this, we are in trials with several other Zoos testing the possible future applications of PetFibre.

We are proud of the PetFibre journey and its humble beginning thanks to Ziggy.

What is PetFibre?

PetFibre is 100% made from the waste product of Coconuts, this is commonly known as Coir. We use this to create four products for use in animal bedding:

  • PetFibre 70L Bale – This product comes in a 5KG Bale and when rehydrated creates 70L of inert bedding material. It is very soft and is currently used for Callitrichids, Reptiles and some mammals. It has also been considered for use with Tapir and Red Panda.

  • PetFibre 10L Slab - This product comes in a 650g Slab and when re-hydrated creates 10L of inert bedding material. It is very soft and is currently used for Callitrichids, Reptiles and some mammals. It has also been considered for use with Tapir and Red Panda. This format is better for small habitats and tanks.

  • PetFibre 5L Slab - This product comes in a 300g Slab and when rehydrated creates 5L of inert bedding material. It is very soft and is currently used for Callitrichids, Reptiles and some mammals. It has also been considered for use with Tapir and Red Panda. This format is better for small habitats and tanks.

  • PetFibre Coir Chip Husk 4.5KG - The Coir Chips are aimed more at hoof stock. They provide larger pieces of coconut by-product and are therefore more hard wearing.

Why PetFibre:

PetFibre has been tried and tested by national zoos and small scale users. We are confident that our product is safe, sustainable and time saving.

Sustainability

  • By-product. Our bales and slabs are made from coconut by products that would otherwise go to waste, we re-purpose these waste materials.
  • Organic & Traceable. All our products are certified organic and fully traceable. They don’t harbour any unexpected items.
  • Low Carbon Footprint. Our Coir has a low carbon footprint thanks to the trees it grows on.
  • Compostable. Once used, it can be added to compost heaps and used for plants.

Welfare

  • Easy to clean. Through working with our partners, we have developed a best use guide for PetFibre. This explains the easiest way to use PetFibre to reduce waste, increase longevity and protect animal welfare.
  • Humidity Control. PetFibre retains water well, and it allows humidity to be controlled when combined with temperature control.
  • Organic and Inert. The product is both organic and inert, meaning it doesn’t harbour any unexpected items.

Time Saving

  • Storage and Movability. The Bales and Slabs format allows easy stacking and storage. For larger orders, this enables pallet delivery, which is faster and more simple.
  • Growth. PetFibre Bales when re-hydrated grow to produce 70L of inert bedding.
  • Aesthetically pleasing. The product provides a nice looking floor covering for enclosures.

How to use PetFibre:

PetFibre is rehydrated with water to expand and create our comfortable bedding. We recommend doing this either in the enclosure or in buckets. You simply add water to the PetFibre Bale or Slab and watch it expand.

The required water quantities are below:

Format Water Quantity
PetFibre 70L Bale  25 Litres of Water
PetFibre 10L Slab 2 Litres of Water
PetFibre 5L Slab 1 Litre of Water
PetFibre Coir Chip Husk 4.5Kg No water required

These water quantities are just recommendations. In the event your bale or slab doesn't expand as much, add more water a little bit at a time. Continue to mix as you do this.
